Moving to a new city can be a life-changing experience, and my first month in Dubai with Luxe Immersive Travel has been nothing short of exhilarating. This journey has been a whirlwind of cultural immersion, networking, and unforgettable moments. Let me take you through the incredible experiences that have defined my first month in this vibrant city.
A Taste of Ghana's Rich Culture
Just a few days after arriving in Dubai, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Ghana. It was an adventure filled with cultural wonders and new flavors. I was welcomed into the home of a local Ghanaian who made sure I was well fed and felt like I was home. A Ghanaian chef come over everyday to prepare the most delicious meals! The highlight of my trip was experiencing the Chale Wote Festival, a vibrant celebration of art, music, and creativity. The streets came alive with colorful displays, and I was immersed in the rich culture of Ghana.
Of course, no trip to Ghana would be complete without indulging in some delicious street food. I savored "Cue kosua ne meko," a popular Ghanaian street snack. It consisted of a hard-boiled egg split slightly down the middle and stuffed with a chunky tomato relish —an explosion of flavors that left a lasting impression. During long car drives, a favor snack was a fresh mango from a street vendor!
I also had a custom traditional dress made. The experience was incredible. I went to the Art Market to pick out the fabric. While there, I was fitted for waist beads, bought a pair of beaded slippers, a few paintings, and a must-have, Ghanian Adidas shirt. After the Market, I went to the tailor to get my measurements and to show how I wanted the dress made - it turned out to be a skirt and top that fit beautifully!
Historical Insights at Cape Coast Castle
During my time in Ghana, I also visited the Cape Coast Castle, a poignant reminder of the complex history that connects Africa and the world. Walking through its corridors, I couldn't help but reflect on the resilience of the people who once walked these same paths. It was a humbling experience that deepened my understanding of the past and the present. My visit to Cape Coast Castle also made me reflect on the debate on Critical Race Theory being taught in schools. I believe it is important that children of all races know the history of America and how slavery impacted not only my ancestors but had a lasting effect on the world today. I believe it is a disservice to our children to not teach the truth about history, to "rewrite" history by describing slavery as a benefit. It was truly a heart-wrenching experience to see where people were held captive in dark dungeons, where women were told to bathe before being raped, where those who disobeyed were held in a suffocating cell until all occupants died, where the children heard the wails from the wells before entering school, and the door of no return where my ancestors would see Ghana for the last time. Though it is a depressing experience, I recommend a visit to Cape Coast Castle to gain appreciation of life and freedom, and to have a better understanding and compassion for the black experience.
Beach Bliss at Labadi Beach
For some relaxation and leisure, I spent quality time at Labadi Beach, soaking in the sun and enjoying the gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach offered a serene escape, a contrast to the vibrant streets of Accra. It was a perfect way to recharge before returning to Dubai.
The Dubai Experience: Music and Networking
Back in Dubai, I dived into a three-day vocal retreat with Singer Jazmin Crumley, a renowned background singer for many popular Gospel and R&B artists. The event was hosted by Snap& Boom, an Artist Management and Support company here in Dubai and the UK. It was an opportunity to refine my skills and connect with fellow music enthusiasts in the Dubai music scene.
September was also a month of networking with other black-owned businesses. I attended events like "Breakfast with a Purpose," hosted by Kai Charles, the owner of Black Girl In Dubai, and a Community Meetup with the UAE Africa Networking Group. These gatherings provided valuable connections and insights into the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit in Dubai. And the best part, most of the networking events I attended was held at Kiza, my favorite restaurant.
Curating for the All Africa Festival
One of the most exciting developments was the invitation to curate tour packages for the All Africa Festival. This festival showcases celebrity artists from the continent of Africa and will be held in Abu Dhabi at the Ferrari Park. It's a fantastic opportunity to share the magic of Luxe Immersive Travel with a broader audience.
New Beginnings: Dubai Harbour and Halloween Extravaganza
As October begins, I'm settling into a stunning new apartment overlooking the Dubai Harbour, with the iconic Burj Khalifa on the horizon. Luxe Immersive Travel will host its first party on Halloween Day, featuring a costume party and a yacht cruise in the Dubai Harbour. I am looking forward to partying with the local community and our Tour Group coming from USA - it's the perfect way to celebrate our journey and the exciting times ahead.
My first month in Dubai has been an incredible ride, filled with cultural exploration, networking, and business opportunities. Luxe Immersive Travel is thriving in this dynamic city, and I can't wait to share more exciting news and experiences that this move has brought. Stay tuned for more adventures with us!
